What is the Church of Christ

The church of Christ was founded on the day of Pentecost in 33ad (Acts 2). It has existed ever since that day (Matthew 16.18). We are not a denomination. There is only one church (Ephesians 4:4, 1:22-23), one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism. The church is made up of all those who have put their faith in Christ to save them from their sin (Romans 3:21-22), who have confessed Jesus as the Son of God (Acts 8:37) and their Lord (Romans 10:9-10), who have repented of their sins (Acts 2:38), and then have put their Lord on in baptism (Galatians 3:27), having been buried with Him in baptism (Romans 6:4-6) for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). These individuals make up the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-14), which is the church of Christ. Jesus is the head of this body (Colossians 1:18) and has all authority over it (Matthew 28:18-20; Ephesians 1:20-23). Individuals that are members of the one universal church who assemble and are in fellowship with other members of the one universal church make up the local congregation. The Bible has given instruction as to how the local congregation should be structured to expedite the work of Christ.

What to Expect When You Worship With Us

You will be treated as an honored and respected guest. You will not be embarrassed and in keeping with our goal to carefully follow the Bible, our worship includes only activities that are authorized in the New Testament. On each Sunday, the first day of the week, we partake of the Lord’s Supper which is a memorial of our Savior’s death (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:24-26). You will find us joining together in enthusiastic congregational singing. We sing to praise God and exhort one another, but not for entertainment (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16), and you may notice we do not use any instrumental music in our worship, in keeping with the teachings of the New Testament. We offer prayers of supplication and thanksgiving (1 Timothy 2:1-2). The sermons are designed to exhort and instruct and are based on the Word of God. Accurate and relevant Bible teaching is an important element of our assemblies. We believe that we should have Scriptural authority for everything that we do as Christians, and as a church. The Bible is the inspired Word of God, and it is all that we use to determine our practices and beliefs. (Titus 2:1-2; 2 Timothy 4:2-5) Only on Sunday do we pass the collection plate so members can give as they have purposed in their hearts for the furtherance of the work of the church (1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:7). Our visitors should not feel under any obligation to contribute but may do so if they desire. On Sunday we also have Bible classes for all ages before our worship. We offer opportunities for everyone, age one and up, to study God’s Word at a level that can be understood.

There is no need to feel uncomfortable about dress requirements. Wear what you have, or what you think is appropriate. We are ordinary people. If you need assistance with a personal or spiritual matter, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. The best advice that we can give you is to “Come and see.” (John 1:46). Be our guest for a few weeks – observe, ask questions, get acquainted and prayerfully consider the things that you hear. Please be our guest.
Please accept this invitation to visit with the South Valley church of Christ.
